iPhone Wireless Charging Settings

1. Check If Your iPhone Have Wireless Charging Built in

The latest iPhones have wireless charging built in. This allows you to place the iPhone directly on any Qi wireless charger to get it charged. You don't need to go to Settings to set up anything.

Those iPhones that have wireless charging built in include:

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus

Old iPhones do not have wireless charging built in. They cannot be charged directly on a wireless charger. But you can add wireless charging to those iPhones first and place them to a Qi wireless charger.

Old iPhones that are compatible with wireless charging include:

  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone SE
  • iPhone 6S
  • iPhone 6S Plus
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 5S

2. How to Enable Wireless Charging Settings on All iPhones

Enable wireless charging settings on latest iPhones:

For the latest iPhones that have wireless charging built in (such as iPhone 11, iPhone XS), it's super easy to enable wireless charging.

The wireless charging settings on these iPhones are enabled by default. You don't need to do anything on the iPhone settings. But to charge them in the 7.5W fast wireless charging mode, you need to enable the fast wireless charging. See the Part 3 for more details.

To charge the iPhones wirelessly:

  • Connect your wireless charger to power.
  • Place your iPhone onto the exact center of the charger with the phone display facing up.

If you get a high quality wireless charger, it will recognize the iPhone immediately and charge it right away.

Add wireless charging on old iPhones:

It's very easy to add wireless charging on old iPhones and it's been also applied to other smartphones, such as Samsung, LG and Sony.

To add wireless charging on old iPhones:

  • Buy a Qi wireless charging receiver (see what it is). Nillkin and YKing are the leaders in this field.
  • Attach it onto the back of the iPhone and insert the connector into the iPhone charging port.

Done! Now you can wirelessly charge the old iPhone:

  • Connect your wireless charger to power.
  • Place your iPhone onto the exact center of the charger with the phone display facing up.

The Qi wireless charger will detect the iPhone quickly and get it charged. All old iPhones get charged at 5W standard wireless charging speed.

Important: Make sure your iPhone has the latest iOS version.

3. Cannot Fast Charge Your iPhone? Here Is the Solution

The latest iPhones support fast wireless charging at rates up to 7.5W. They are:

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus

To fast charge your iPhone at rates up to 7.5 watts, you need to enable the fast wireless charging feature by using a Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 adapter for the wireless charger.

It's an indispensable accessory to activate the fast wireless charging settings. Check to see how to select a right power adapter for your Qi wireless charger.

We've seen many users bought a correct fast wireless charger but with a non-fast adapter, like a 5V/2A adapter. In this case, when you put your phone onto the wireless charger, it won't charge your phone in the fast mode.

Once you get a fast wireless charger with a correct power adapter, your iPhone will be charged at 7.5W.

If not, try to restart your iPhone or the wireless charger.

Important: Wired charging takes priority. Your iPhone won't charge wirelessly when connected to USB.

4. Wireless Charging Not Working? Here Are the Solutions

If you've put your iPhone on a wireless charger and found wireless charging not working, you can try the solutions below to fix it.

Reset the Wireless Charger or Change the Cable/Wall Adapter

The wireless charger may have inner conflicts. You can try to reset it to shut off the systems. To reset the wireless charger, you just need to simply unplug and replug the cable or the wall adapter.

In many cases, the cable or the wall adapter may cause the wireless charger not working correctly. Try to use another cable (the iPhone's original one) or another AC power adapter for the wireless charger.

Restart the iPhone

Glitches or bugs (conflicts) can also cause the iPhone wireless charging not working correctly. A restart can shut off all conflicts and glitches. Remember, when there is a problem, a restart always fix it.

Update to the Latest iOS Version

Go to settings to check if there is a new version. If yes, download and install it. A new iOS version can solve the wireless charging not working issue caused by software.

Update or Uninstall Apps

Some apps may interfere with the wireless charging process. It's recommended to update the apps to the latest version. To check if an app (or apps) causes this issue, restart the iPhone to Safe Mode:

  • Turn the iPhone off.
  • Once the iPhone is completely off, turn it on by holding down the power button.
  • Once the iPhone lights up, hold down the volume down button until the Apple log appears.
  • When the iPhone has booted, it will be in the Safe Mode.
  • Place the iPhone onto the wireless charger and see if it's charged.

If yes, definitely one of the apps is causing the issue. Uninstall the apps you've added recently. You can uninstall the app one by one and then check if the wireless charger can charge your phone again.

Reset All Settings

There is chance that the iPhone wireless charging relevant settings are not being configured properly over time. You can reset all settings and your iPhone will be wirelessly charged again on your wireless charger.

Note: A reset on the settings will erase all customized options. It won't remove any saved data and apps on the phone.

We take iPhone XS as the example.

  • Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  • Tap General.
  • Scroll down and tap Reset.
  • Select Reset All Settings option.
  • Enter your device passcode if prompted.
  • Confirm all settings reset.

Wait until the reset is finished. Your phone will restart after the reset. Place the phone onto the wireless charger again to see if it's charged.
